About us

The Massies Mill Ruritan Club was chartered in 1951, and is part of the Woodrow Wilson District Ruritans. It started as the inspration of Carl Raines, Sr., who became its first president. The first mission of the club was to organize and start the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department. This was accomplished in 1954 with the purchase of its first fire truck.

Since then, the Massies Mill Ruritan Club has promoted and supported many other community activities, such as the Scouts, Future Farmers of America, Nelson County public schools, youth athletics, and civic improvements. At first, meetings were held in church social halls and other locations. In the 1960's, our present lot was purchased and our building was completed by 1970. It is decicated to Carl Raines, our first president, who died in the Hurricane Camille flood the previous year.

The Club's building and grounds are a major community resource, providing a venue for events like the annual Carnival and spring and fall Saturday dances, and they can be rented for weddings, family reunions, meetings, and other events.

The Club raises money through its regular fund-raising events (its annual July Carnival and its participation in the Flippin Seaman Apple Butter Fesitval in October and in Relay For Life); through monthly Saturday night dances in the spring and fall; and through rental of its building. In the past year, the Club contributed over $13,000 to community groups and individuals.

The club holds dinner meetings monthly for fellowship, information-sharing, and club business. Please click on the Membership Info link on the left if you are interested in joining us.
